Wildlife

The Eastern Cape is renowned for its diversity of flora and wildlife. Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, with its long-standing history of conservation in action, has an abundant array of game, and thousands of animals roam the expansive plains. The reserve is a sanctuary for numerous threatened and endangered species and a breeding refuge for the national bird of South Africa, the Blue Crane; the meaning of Kwandwe in isiXhosa is, in fact, “Place of the Blue Crane.”

On safari at Kwandwe, you will more than likely spot the Big Five (black & white rhino, elephant, lion, buffalo and leopard), as well as a remarkable variety of predators and general game, including cheetah, kudu, springbok, eland, red hartebeest, giraffe, black wildebeest and gemsbok A paradise for birdwatchers, the Fish Eagle and endangered Blue Crane are among a wide variety of birds found on the Reserve. The nocturnal game-viewing is also excellent, with aardwolf, aardvark and porcupine regularly spotted.
